Situated at an altitude ranging from 2400 km to 4,507, the Volcanoes National Park (French: Parc National des Vulcans) is a breathtaking destination dominated by towering volcanoes, from which it takes its name. It is best known as the site of the groundbreaking studies of mountain gorilla behavior conducted by the pioneering American primatologist, Dian Fossey, for nearly 20 years.

Trekking to see the gorilla families can be a challenging experience, as it involves hiking through steep slopes in the forest, and time with the gorillas is strictly limited. However, encountering these majestic creatures in their natural habitat is a rare and unforgettable experience.

Our accommodation is situated in an ideal location for observing animals in their natural habitat, particularly the endangered Rwanda Mountain Gorillas, who still roam freely in these areas.

Day 2: Trek the Gorillas family groups in Parc National des Volcanos/Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda

Have early morning breakfast and go to ORTPN office headquarters for briefing after which we set off in the forest for Gorilla trekking. A thrilling trek through the refined foothills of the Virungas provides inspiring views in all directions. Then, suddenly, the trail enters the national park, engrossing trekkers in the strange closeness of the rain-forest, alive with the calls of colorful birds and chattering of the rare golden monkey, and besieged with fresh spoor of the mountains elusive populations of buffalo and elephant. Through gaps in the forest canopy, the marvelous peaks are sighted, easily easy to get to and among the uppermost in Africa, indicating an ascent. Gorilla trekking is quite strenuous but worthwhile when you encounter these gentle giants. The enthusiasm of your coming across with these apes will wipe away your intricacy of the strenuous trek. Spend time watching gorillas, watch the adults feeding their young ones, brushing and resting as the youngsters play from vines in a pleasurably playful display.

Parc National des Volcans is home to several gorilla family groups, each with its own unique members and dynamics. Some of the well-known gorilla families in the park include:

  1. Susa Group: This is the largest gorilla group in the park with over 35 members, including several infants and juveniles. It was the group studied by Dian Fossey and was named after her former research assistant.

  2. Karisimbi Group: This is a relatively small group of gorillas that live near the summit of Mount Karisimbi, one of the park’s volcanoes. The group is led by a silverback named Nyagakangaga.

  3. Sabyinyo Group: This group has around 13 members and is led by a silverback named Guhonda. It is known for its friendly and curious demeanor towards visitors.

  4. Amahoro Group: This group has around 17 members, including two silverbacks. It is known for its peaceful nature and is a great group for visitors who want a calmer gorilla trekking experience.

  5. Hirwa Group: This group is relatively new and was formed by individuals from other groups. It has around 16 members, including a few infants, and is led by a young silverback named Munyinya.

These are just a few examples of the gorilla family groups you can encounter in Parc National des Volcans. Each group has its own unique story and personality, making each gorilla trekking experience a one-of-a-kind adventure. Lunch will be had en route the trek.

The accommodation is ideally positioned for those who want to watch animals in their habitat, specifically the endangered Rwanda Mountain Gorillas that still roam these areas. You can also share in the cuisines of Rwanda, which are served well with great hospitality for which you will want to return too.
